The remnants of this once thriving 19th century silver boomtown bear stark witness to Montana’s boom-and-bust mining history. This was the richest silver mine on the earth, a bonanza that yielded $40 million. Its population before the silver panic of 1893 was more than 3,000 miners. It’s been deserted for more than 100 years and is now mostly eroded and overgrown. The natural world is so fragile under the boot of industry, yet it inevitably wins out over time when we are long gone. |
